PLO 1 Students will be able to demonstrate systemic understanding of applied linguistics research

1) Students will be able to explain issues in applied linguistics, theoretical principles of research, and objectives and procedures of different research paradigms in applied linguistics.

Plan A: Every semester
Deadline for application to study in the first semester is June of every year.

Educational system

  • The programme is full-time, two semesters in one academic year. The courses are conducted in English.
  • The programme offers two plans.

Plan A is research-oriented. It focuses on researching to create new knowledge. The PhD candidates are required to take a 48-credit dissertation. They may take additional courses but they will not be counted as credits for graduation.

Plan B is research and taught courses. It focuses on conducting high quality research which brings about academic and professional progress. The PhD candidates are required to take a 36-credit dissertation and 12 credits of courses.

  • Details of registration are as follows:

Plan A 48 credits of dissertation. The PhD candidates must pass the qualifying examination and submitting their research proposal in the first semester.

Plan B 12 credits of taught courses (2 compulsory courses in the first semester and 2 optional courses which are related to their research in the second semester) and 36 credits of dissertation. The PhD candidates must take all 4 courses within the first 2 semesters and prepare to take the qualifying examination. They must pass the qualifying examination before being allowed to register for dissertation and to submit their research proposal.

  • The PhD candidates are required to report their progress to the Postgraduate Committee of the Department of Language Studies every semester for evaluation to get credits.
  • The dissertation accounts for 36 credits and it is supervised by 2 supervisors.
  • PhD candidates are required to report their progress in a seminar which is held every semester
  • From the second year of study, the PhD candidates are encouraged to present their research work in an international conference and to spend some time in an English speaking country in order to have exposure to English and use it in an English-language context. The PhD candidates can also work with professors in the universities that have contacts with KMUTT. The Department of Languages will partially sponsor this activity.

Venue and equipment 

School of Liberal Arts, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi. In addition, we provide a study room with shared computers, printers and wireless connection to be used with the notebooks, a micro-teaching room, and a multimedia room for materials production to support teaching, learning and research.

Texts, periodicals and other resources to do research can be obtained from 2 places.

  • The university main library which houses more than 30,000 texts and 4 periodicals in Applied Linguistics. The main library also provides IT technology to access the following databases: ERIC, ACM, ACS, DAO and full-text article databases such as Science Direct. In addition, the main library provides an inter-library loan service both domestically and internationally.
  • The Resource Centre of the School of Liberal Arts which is a specialized library that houses texts, coursebooks and periodicals in Applied Linguistics. In addition, the Resource Centre provides an Internet system for students to search for more knowledge related to their learning and/or researching. For more information, access our Resource Centre.

Financial Aid
The Department offers several sources of financial support for the candidates: teaching, assisting, or receiving a grant/scholarship. Candidates can apply to teach courses at the undergraduate level. You can also work as an assistant in teaching (Teaching Assistant), or research (Research Assistant), or to the Self-Access Learning Center and Resource Center (SALC and RC Assistant). Scholarships and grants are also available if you maintain good academic performance.

The faculty provides funding for you to present the paper in an international conference in Thailand and you also have 25,000 Baht subsidy which can be used to either present the paper in the international conference overseas or to go abroad and to do research take  courses with university overseas.

You can also get funding to present a paper in an international conference in Thailand but that conference has to have proceedings.
